Mission Statement
"To work
toward the prevention of suicide through
community education and intervention services to people in crisis and post crisis
care"
The Pueblo Suicide Prevention Center was incorporated in March 1968
for the purpose of establishing a 24 hour emergency suicide intervention hotline. The
organization was started by 23 prominent citizens, comprised of Colorado State Hospital
doctors and community leaders. It was established in response to need, identified through
the State Hospital, to offer an intervention system that would defuse potential high risk
crisis in an immediate and easily accessible method. This was seen as a direct prevention
measure to decease suicide attempts and actual suicides.
Statement of Organizational Philosophy
The Pueblo Suicide Prevention Centers purpose is to reduce the
number of suicides and suicide attempts in Pueblo County and Southeastern Colorado. Pueblo
Suicide Prevention Center works in three (3) main areas.
The first is Prevention. This includes Public Speaking, Workshops, Training
Sessions, Preparation and Dissemination of literature.
The second area of services is Crisis Intervention. The 24 hour
HELP LINE and TEEN LINE are staffed with trained volunteers to
handle calls. A Resource and Referral network is used as is appropriate with callers. One
to one in office counseling by appointment is also available.
A support group for those survivors of friends and relatives of
suicide is our third area of service. This is called Postvention. Included in this
area is our victim, grief and trauma counseling.
We are dedicated to reducing the incidence of suicide,
increasing
public awareness of suicide issues, provide training to both the community and
professionals and to the pursuit of research endeavors to increase the body of suicide knowledge.
Our programs targets the high risk populations such as teens,
elderly and victims of crime and sudden trauma.
We are committed to offer these services through the maximum use of
volunteers and self help activities.
We pledge to work directly with individuals, groups, professionals,
business and community organizations; seeks coordination of services related to suicide
issues with community, state and national organizations; and develop and maintain
resources, both human and financial, to fulfill our basic purpose.
